Bandar Lampung, 21 October 2025 — PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP), through its subsidiary PLN NP Services, once again reaffirmed its concrete commitment to supporting Indonesia’s clean energy transition by inaugurating the Bandar Lampung Biomass Production Unit (UPBBL). The facility is the first biomass plant in Indonesia equipped with Rotary Dryer technology, enabling the production of high-quality biomass to support the co-firing program at coal-fired power plants (PLTU) across Sumatra.
The inauguration of UPBBL, located at Lintas Sumatra Highway KM.15, Tarahan, Lampung, was attended by Director of Coal-Fired Generation Operations of PLN NP, M. Irwansyah Putra, President Director of PLN Nusantara Power Services, Jakfar Sadiq, President Commissioner of PLN NP Services, Suwarno, and Manager of PLN NP UP Tarahan, Suwarno.
With a production capacity of up to 70 tons of biomass per day, or approximately 23,100 tons per year, UPBBL is set to ensure a continuous, high-quality, and sustainable biomass supply. The biomass produced will support co-firing implementation at several coal-fired power plants, including UP Tarahan.
The facility’s key advantage lies in its Rotary Dryer machine, which is capable of reducing moisture content by up to 20% more effectively than conventional methods. This technology produces high-quality woodchips with a Gross Calorific Value (GCV) exceeding 3,500 kCal/kg, ensuring optimal performance in co-firing applications.
Beyond its environmental benefits, UPBBL also delivers positive socio-economic impacts for surrounding communities. Approximately 90% of the workforce at the facility comes from local residents, while raw wood materials are fully sourced from nearby regions such as Bergen, Tanjung Bintang, Way Kanan, Mesuji, and Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI).
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, emphasized that the inauguration of UPBBL represents tangible proof of the company’s commitment to green and sustainable power generation.
“PLN Nusantara Power continues to innovate in strengthening Indonesia’s clean energy ecosystem. The presence of UPBBL not only increases biomass supply capacity for co-firing, but also symbolizes regional energy independence through the empowerment of local resources and workforce. This initiative is part of our broader effort to achieve the Net Zero Emission 2060 target,” said Ruly.
Meanwhile, Director of Coal-Fired Generation Operations of PLN NP, M. Irwansyah Putra, expressed his appreciation to all parties involved in realizing the project.
“The establishment of UPBBL marks the expansion of green infrastructure within the PLN Nusantara Power Group while strengthening the national biomass supply chain. This initiative is crucial in driving the energy transition toward a greener and more sustainable future,” he stated.
In 2024, PLN NP successfully produced 69 GWh of green electricity, with biomass co-firing accounting for 1.57% of total generation capacity. With the operation of UPBBL, this contribution is projected to increase significantly in the coming years. UPBBL is also expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 12.7 million kilograms of CO? per year, while saving 3.36% of coal consumption at PLTU Tarahan, equivalent to a 14.05% co-firing contribution.
President Director of PLN NP Services, Jakfar Sadiq, also conveyed his commitment to ensuring optimal operation of UPBBL.
“We hope for full support from PLN Nusantara Power so that UPBBL can operate efficiently and continue delivering high-quality biomass for coal-fired power plants across Sumatra,” Jakfar stated.
The inauguration ceremony concluded with the dispatch of the first biomass delivery truck from UPBBL to UP Tarahan, symbolizing the commencement of full commercial operations at the facility.
The presence of UPBBL marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s energy transition journey—strengthening local energy independence, reducing carbon emissions, and opening new opportunities for a green economy for the people of Lampung and surrounding regions. (*)
