Surabaya, May 25, 2026 — PT PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) continues to strengthen the reliability and flexibility of its thermal power plants as part of its ongoing efforts to support Indonesia’s national energy transition. This strategic objective was the primary focus of a joint seminar and focus group discussion held in Surabaya from May 20–21, 2026, in collaboration with Japanese manufacturing giant, Mitsubishi Power.
The seminar served as a strategic forum for key stakeholders in the power generation sector — including representatives from PLN, PLN Nusantara Power, PLN Indonesia Power, and the Mitsubishi Power Group — ranging from engineers and manufacturers to technology providers and operations and maintenance practitioners. The forum facilitated active discussions and knowledge transfer, exploring technical solutions and operational innovations to address the increasingly dynamic challenges of the electricity system, particularly regarding thermal plant optimization and the future energy transition.
Komang Parmita, Director of Gas Power Plant Operations at PLN Nusantara Power, noted that the energy transition has fundamentally reshaped electricity system operations. With the rising penetration of renewable energy, power systems are required to be more adaptive in responding to fluctuations in supply and demand.
"In the energy transition era, thermal power plants can no longer function solely as conventional baseload generators. They must evolve into flexible, reliable assets capable of supporting the stability of the national electricity grid," said Parmita.
According to Parmita, operational reliability and flexibility have become paramount to maintaining national energy security. Thermal power plants play a critical role in ensuring grid stability, especially when systems face the variability inherent in renewable energy sources.
"The success of the energy transition is determined not only by how quickly we build new renewable energy plants, but also by how robustly we maintain the reliability, flexibility, and resilience of our existing electricity infrastructure. In this context, operational excellence serves as the foundation," Parmita added.
The seminar commenced with a panel discussion featuring industry leaders and experts from Indonesia’s power sector, who exchanged views on the evolving role of thermal power, strategies for operational excellence, technological development, asset reliability, and collaborative navigation of the energy transition era. These discussions are expected to bolster the implementation of best practices, enhance operational reliability, and drive concrete innovations applicable across the PLN Group’s generation fleet.
PLN NP emphasizes that technological mastery alone is insufficient to manage the operational complexities of the energy transition era. A robust collaboration between utilities, manufacturers, engineers, and technology providers is essential to accelerate the operational transformation of power plants.
PLN NP also expressed its appreciation to all speakers, panelists, engineers, and partners who contributed to the seminar. The forum is intended to produce not only meaningful dialogue but also actionable recommendations, insights, and innovations to strengthen the national power generation ecosystem.
By prioritizing reliability, flexibility, innovation, and operational excellence, PLN NP remains committed to supporting the national energy transition agenda without compromising the reliability and resilience of the electricity system. (*)
