Bekasi, January 27 – Commission XII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) expressed its appreciation for the performance and reliability of the Muara Tawar Gas and Steam Power Plant (PLTGU Muara Tawar) in maintaining the stability of the national electricity system. The appreciation was conveyed during a specific working visit by Commission XII to the strategic power generation facility in Bekasi, West Java.
PLTGU Muara Tawar is recognized for its crucial role as a fast-response peaker plant, which functions to safeguard electricity supply reliability, particularly during system disturbances or peak load surges within the Java–Madura–Bali (Jamali) interconnected system.
Chairman of Commission XII DPR RI, Sugeng Suparwoto, emphasized that PLTGU Muara Tawar plays a vital role as a follower power plant that is ready to respond swiftly whenever additional power is required by the system.
“PLTGU Muara Tawar is extremely important as it serves as a backup power supply during system disruptions or emergency conditions. This plant has proven to be highly reliable, well-managed with sound governance, and has implemented Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles,” said Sugeng.
In line with this view, Commission XII member Totok Daryanto highlighted PLTGU Muara Tawar as a strategic power plant that is consistently prepared to face various potential disruptions, including those caused by extreme weather and the impacts of climate change. This readiness is particularly critical given that PLTGU Muara Tawar serves regions with the highest electricity demand in the country, including Jakarta, Banten, West Java, and much of Java Island.
“The readiness of this power plant is quite good, with reliability levels reaching approximately 94 to 96 percent throughout 2025. Potential power outage issues can be effectively anticipated through well-prepared units and a solid operational system,” stated the PAN Party politician.
Totok further added that continuous technological upgrades and equipment rejuvenation are essential to ensure sustained efficiency and to keep pace with the latest developments in power generation technology. Beyond supply reliability, Commission XII also paid close attention to the plant’s environmental commitment.
“Overall, the performance of PLTGU Muara Tawar has been good, both in serving the electricity needs of the community and in maintaining its commitment to environmental aspects. This achievement must be continuously upheld so that its benefits can be optimally felt by the public,” he added.
During the visit, President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, explained that PLTGU Muara Tawar is one of PLN NP’s strategic assets, operated with a strong emphasis on reliability, safety, and environmental sustainability. According to him, the plant is equipped with fast-response gas turbine technology and supporting systems that enable rapid system recovery during major disturbances.
“The continuous performance improvement of power plants, including PLTGU Muara Tawar, is tangible proof of the capability and competence of PLN Nusantara Power’s human resources. This demonstrates PLN Nusantara Power’s readiness to contribute not only to its own power plants, but also to enhancing the performance of independent power producers, in order to realize a reliable and sustainable electricity supply,” said Ruly.
PLTGU Muara Tawar has a total installed capacity of more than 2,559 MW and is connected to the 500 kV transmission system, making it one of the main pillars in securing the national electricity system, particularly in the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area. With consistent operational performance and the support of competent human resources, the plant continues to be relied upon as a backbone of electricity reliability in Indonesia’s highest-load regions.
One of the key strengths of PLTGU Muara Tawar lies in its fast-response gas turbine technology, which allows the plant to operate quickly during load surges. In addition, the CNG Plant facility owned by PLTGU Muara Tawar plays a critical role in supporting the recovery of the Jamali system in emergency situations such as blackouts. From an operational performance perspective, PLTGU Muara Tawar consistently maintains unit readiness levels above 90 percent, in accordance with the international standards of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).
