Jakarta, May 7, 2026 – PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) has once again earned national recognition for its commitment to the nation’s energy transition. President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, through Presidential Decree No. 126/TK/2025, has awarded the Satyalancana Wira Karya — a distinguished honor for exceptional service — to Ardi Nugroho, Vice President of Technology Development at PLN Nusantara Power. The award was presented by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, in Jakarta, honoring Nugroho’s significant contributions to environmentally friendly energy innovation in Indonesia.
The honor recognizes Nugroho’s dedication to advancing biomass co-firing technology. This strategic breakthrough enables coal-fired power plants (CFPP) to reduce their reliance on coal by partially replacing it with biomass, including sawdust, woodchips, rice husks, and palm kernel shells.
Ruly Firmansyah, President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, noted that this achievement is a testament to the company’s workforce and their dedication to driving Indonesia’s energy transition.
"The Satyalancana Wira Karya awarded to Ardi Nugroho is a point of pride for the entire PLN Nusantara Power family. It reflects our commitment to sustainable innovation. Biomass co-firing serves as a tangible solution for curbing carbon emissions while strengthening national energy security through local resources," said Firmansyah.
PLN NP stands as the pioneer of biomass co-firing in Indonesia. The initiative began with research and trials in 2018, followed by the first successful commercial go-live at the Paiton Power Plant on June 10, 2020, which has since become the national benchmark for other power plants.
To date, PLN NP’s biomass co-firing program has been commercially implemented across 25 power plants, with a total of 81 plants having undergone testing. Several power plants have even successfully achieved 100% full biomass firing, demonstrating the vast potential of biomass as a future alternative energy source.
Throughout 2025, PLN NP’s biomass co-firing implementation generated 1,041 GWh of green energy and reduced carbon emissions by 1.17 million tons of CO?e. This positive trend continued into the first quarter of 2026, producing 245 GWh of green energy and reducing emissions by 286,000 tons of CO?e.
Beyond technological innovation, the program stimulates a grassroots economy by utilizing agricultural, plantation, and forestry waste.
Expressing gratitude for the honor, Ardi Nugroho attributed the achievement to team collaboration and stakeholder support.
"This award is not just for me, but for the entire PLN Nusantara Power team that continues to innovate tirelessly," said Nugroho. "Biomass co-firing proves that the energy transition can be carried out gradually, inclusively, and based on Indonesia's local potential. We believe this step will be a crucial foundation toward achieving our 2060 Net Zero Emissions target."
With Indonesia’s abundant biomass potential — ranging from wood waste to agricultural and plantation byproducts — PLN NP remains optimistic that biomass co-firing will continue to evolve as a strategic solution to support the renewable energy mix while maintaining the reliability of the national power supply.
