Jakarta, July 27, 2026 – The transition toward clean energy requires not only renewable energy-based power plants, but also a supportive ecosystem capable of fostering future energy sources. Addressing this challenge, PT PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) shared its experience and strategy in developing a hydrogen ecosystem at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition (GHES) 2026 on Thursday (July 23) at the Jakarta International Convention Center.
During the forum, which brought together energy sector stakeholders from home and abroad, PLN NP detailed how hydrogen development forms a crucial part of the company's transformation toward low-carbon power generation while supporting national energy security.
The presentation was delivered by the Head of the Technology Development and Asset Management Division at PLN Nusantara Power, Hery Artady, who explained that the company’s hydrogen development strategy is built on a comprehensive approach—spanning research, technology development, infrastructure construction, to implementation across the power generation and transportation sectors.
According to Hery, all initiatives are grounded in the energy trilemma concept, which aims to deliver secure, affordable, and sustainable energy supplies. Through this approach, PLN Nusantara Power not only maintains the reliability of its power generation system, but also enhances operational efficiency while accelerating carbon emission reductions through the use of renewable energy and low-carbon fuels.
This commitment is realized through six primary company strategies toward Net Zero Emissions (NZE) 2060: accelerating renewable energy development, expanding bioenergy through biomass co-firing, utilizing low-carbon fuels such as gas, hydrogen, and ammonia, implementing de-dieselization and gasification programs, developing future energy solutions, and deploying Carbon Capture Storage/Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS) technologies.
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, stated that hydrogen development is an integral component of PLN NP's transformation to deliver energy solutions that are not only low in emissions, but also capable of creating new economic value for Indonesia.
"For PLN Nusantara Power, hydrogen is not merely an alternative fuel, but part of a long-term strategy to build the energy ecosystem of the future. Therefore, we are developing its entire value chain—from research, green hydrogen production, supporting infrastructure, to its application in power generation and transportation. Through these steps, PLN Nusantara Power aims to provide cleaner, more reliable, and sustainable energy solutions for Indonesia," said Ruly.
To execute this strategy, PLN NP is developing the hydrogen ecosystem through five main pillars: Ammonia to Power (A2P), Green Hydrogen Plant (H2P), Fuel Cell Technology (FCT), Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), and Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS).
On the generation side, the company has demonstrated ammonia co-firing at the Gresik power generation unit as part of its low-carbon fuel adoption. Meanwhile, for green hydrogen production, PLN NP operates eight Green Hydrogen Plants (GHPs)—pioneered at Muara Karang—utilizing renewable energy as the electricity source for the electrolysis process.
Hydrogen development has also materialized through the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Generator (HFCG), an emission-free portable power generator deployed at various national events, including supporting the electrification of Gili Ketapang Island. In the transportation sector, PLN NP has introduced several innovations, ranging from the Hydrogen Electric (H-E) Nusantara, hydrogen vans for logistics needs, hydrogen-fueled Internal Combustion Engine vehicles (ICE Hydrogen SUV), to the development of the "HRS Merah Putih" in Muara Karang, Rembang, and Muara Tawar, as well as a flexible Mobile HRS.
These innovations demonstrate that hydrogen development at PLN NP has advanced beyond the conceptual stage into full implementation across various business lines. Through an integrated approach, the company continues to expand hydrogen utilization as a key decarbonization solution for the energy sector while fostering a national hydrogen ecosystem.
Through its participation in GHES 2026, PLN NP aims to foster stronger collaboration among the government, industry, research institutions, academia, and strategic partners to accelerate hydrogen development in Indonesia. With its ongoing innovations, PLN NP remains confident that hydrogen will become a vital pillar in building a resilient, competitive, and sustainable national energy system.
