Minahasa, February 14, 2026 — PT PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP), through its Minahasa Generation Unit (UP Minahasa), moved swiftly to anticipate flood threats in North Sulawesi by completing sediment dredging along the Tondano River Basin. This concrete effort, carried out from October 2025 to January 2026, aimed to ensure that residents living along the riverbanks can feel safer in facing the peak rainy seasons, which are expected to occur during the periods of May–June and November–December.
This strategic step forms part of the company’s implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the areas of aquatic ecosystem protection and flood risk reduction caused by sedimentation. The dredging was carried out to maintain water capacity and ensure the smooth flow of water, especially in anticipation of increasing rainfall intensity during the rainy season.
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, conveyed the company’s direction in implementing ESG across all of its generation units.
“For us, electricity reliability must go hand in hand with the safety and peace of mind of the community. The dredging of the Tondano River Basin is not merely routine maintenance, but an effort to protect the living spaces of residents from the risk of overflowing waters. We want the presence of hydropower plants to deliver benefits that can be directly felt by every family,” said Ruly.
In carrying out this initiative, PLN Nusantara Power UP Minahasa collaborated with Military Resort Command 131/Santiago (Korem 131/Santiago) Manado as part of strengthening multi-stakeholder synergy. The support of personnel and technical coordination in large-scale community work activities in the field ensured that the operation ran effectively and safely, while continuing to observe occupational safety standards and environmental protection principles.
Manager of PLN Nusantara Power UP Minahasa, Aries Indrianto Elisa, stated that this activity reflects the company’s active role in maintaining a balance between the operational reliability of its power plants and the sustainability of the surrounding environment.
“Sediment dredging along the Tondano River Basin is a tangible manifestation of PLN Nusantara Power’s commitment to preserving the ecological function of the area while supporting flood prevention efforts. We strive to ensure that power plant operations remain aligned with the principles of sustainability and community protection.”
Not only focusing on river cleanup, PLN NP has also engaged local residents in preserving Lake Tondano through the development of a waste bank. This program encourages the community to change the habit of disposing of waste into the water into real action that generates economic value, ensuring that the natural environment of Minahasa is preserved for future generations.
Through its Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program, PLN Nusantara Power UP Minahasa has also initiated the establishment of a waste bank managed jointly with communities around Lake Tondano. The program serves as a means of environmental education while also encouraging integrated waste management to reduce the potential for water pollution.
Through these integrated measures, PLN Nusantara Power reaffirms its commitment to delivering energy that is not only reliable but also sustainable, by ensuring that the ecosystems of the Tondano River Basin and Lake Tondano remain preserved in order to provide long-term ecological, social, and economic benefits for the people of North Sulawesi.
