Jakarta — July 16. PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) continues to strengthen its contribution to supporting the national energy transition through the implementation of biomass cofiring programs in its coal-fired power plants (PLTU). Throughout the first semester of 2026, PLN NP successfully generated 490.5 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of green energy.
The utilization of biomass as a fuel mix with coal has also delivered a positive impact on the environment. As of the end of H1 2026, PLN NP's biomass cofiring execution contributed to a carbon emission reduction of 590.9 thousand tons of $CO_2e$.
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, stated that biomass cofiring serves as a practical and phased energy transition solution that optimizes existing power generation infrastructure.
"The biomass cofiring program represents PLN Nusantara Power's concrete commitment to accelerating the national energy transition. We continue to optimize our existing power generation assets to produce cleaner and reliable electricity while delivering sustainable benefits to society and the environment," said Ruly.
The biomass cofiring program is one of PLN NP's strategic initiatives to deliver cleaner electricity generation without compromising the reliability of energy supply to the public. Through this program, biomass is used as a supplementary fuel in existing power plants, gradually reducing fossil fuel usage and carbon emissions.
In 2025, PLN NP’s biomass cofiring program was commercially implemented across 25 coal-fired power plants. During that period, PLN NP generated 1,041 GWh of green energy and recorded a carbon emission reduction reaching 1.17 million tons of $CO_2e$.
This milestone has continued into the first half of 2026. Generating 490.5 GWh of green energy and reducing 590.9 thousand tons of $CO_2e$ in emissions demonstrate the company's consistency in optimizing biomass utilization as part of its power generation energy mix.
According to Ruly, the successful implementation of cofiring across 25 power plants proves that the transformation toward low-emission power generation can be executed in a measurable manner. Beyond reducing carbon emissions, this program also creates new economic opportunities by establishing local biomass supply chains and ecosystems.
The utilization of biomass promotes the use of local resources, enhances the added value of various organic products and waste, and opens participation channels for local communities, businesses, and partners surrounding power plant operational areas.
"The H1 2026 achievements show that green energy production from biomass cofiring remains on a positive trajectory. The 490.5 GWh of green energy produced serves as a crucial foundation for PLN NP to further increase its low-emission power generation contributions in the upcoming period," Ruly added.
Moving forward, PLN Nusantara Power will continue to develop environmentally friendly power generation innovations, strengthen biomass supply chain sustainability, and enhance cofiring implementation efficiency across all power plant units.
These steps are part of the company's commitment to supporting the transformation of the national electricity sector and achieving Indonesia's Net Zero Emissions target.
