Jakarta, July 29, 2025 — PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP) continues to drive innovation in Indonesia’s energy transition by exploring the potential of nuclear energy as part of the country’s future clean energy mix. Through a strategic collaboration with ThorCon International Pte. Ltd., PLN NP is currently preparing a comprehensive study to assess the feasibility of developing a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, complementing the development of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower.
PLN Nusantara Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ThorCon International Pte. Ltd. on Thursday (July 24), serving as an initial framework for collaboration by synergizing the respective expertise and capabilities of both parties in conducting a feasibility study for a nuclear power project. This MoU marks an important early step toward a more sustainable clean energy transition.
President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, Ruly Firmansyah, reaffirmed the Company’s commitment to supporting national energy self-sufficiency in line with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia’s direction.
“We believe that energy diversification is the key to achieving national energy resilience and independence. This study forms part of PLN NP’s efforts to deliver reliable, safe, and sustainable low-carbon energy sources for Indonesia,” said Ruly Firmansyah.
As part of this strategic collaboration, PLN Nusantara Power and ThorCon have agreed to jointly conduct a study on the proposed development of a Nuclear Power Plant in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. The study will include a comprehensive evaluation of reactor technology, safety, operational and design aspects, as well as financial analysis and potential project cooperation schemes, as part of the preparation for the implementation of Indonesia’s first nuclear power project.
President Director of PT ThorCon Power Indonesia, Niels Berger, viewed the collaboration with PLN NP as a gateway to unlocking Indonesia’s potential in clean energy development.
“We see Indonesia as a country with significant potential to lead in the deployment of safe and efficient nuclear technology. This collaboration represents an important milestone toward delivering long-term clean and stable energy solutions,” said Niels Berger.
This initiative reinforces PLN Nusantara Power’s role as a pioneer in supporting Indonesia’s energy transition toward Net Zero Emissions through a science-based, collaborative, and sustainable approach. PLN NP and ThorCon also open opportunities to involve subsidiaries or affiliates in the implementation of the study, subject to written notification to the relevant parties.
Through this collaboration, PLN Nusantara Power demonstrates its commitment to accelerating the national energy transition through the development of low-emission power generation technologies, in line with Indonesia’s Net Zero Emissions vision.
